How can this man say, with a straight face, that he is not guilty? He was convicted and admitted it in a press release(1) . Yet when Stevens landed in Alaska following the conviction he told the press -
“There’s not a black mark by my name yet, until the appeal is over and I am finally convicted, if that happens. If that happens, of course I’ll do what’s right for Alaska and for the Senate … I don’t anticipate it happening, and until it happens I do not have a black mark.” (2)
I guess its just me and a majority of those of us who live in the lower 48 that don’t see it that way. Stevens’ Alaska supporters point out his record in fighting for Alaska to become a state and getting Alaska money. Thats all fine and well except when you, as a public figure, step over the boundaries and take monies in exchange for your vote.
Tom Bearup , a one-time mayor of Soldotna, “This man is a man who has paid the price. He probably hasn’t done anything the rest of them haven’t done.”(3) (I wont dignify that with a response less to say that everyone else doing it makes it okay?)
“I don’t particularly like it when outsiders tell me what to do,” Rydell said, before Stevens took the stage. “You can kiss my Alaska moose-hunting behind.”(4)
They seemed to share an unshakeable faith in Stevens, a belief that if he said he didn’t do it, he didn’t.(4)
